John BARKER - Photographer
John has always been inspired by the visual and performance arts. An early love of photography was complimented by his passion for theater and filmmaking. After he completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto, John went to England for professional theater training and then moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California Film School.
After finishing his Master of Fine Arts degree, John worked in film editing in L.A. before returning to Canada. Since then his work as a television writer, producer and director has won numerous awards. In the 1990s, digital technology rekindled his interest and creative connection with still photography. His images reflect a synthesis of his many years of experience in the arts of film, video, editing and photography. His image, "Glen Major Mist", has been selected to appear in the 2006 Nikon International Calendar.
John lives in Claremont, Ontario, Canada with his wife and son. Much of his recent work comes from that ever-changing landscape which is rich in history and visual possibilities.
"I live in what used to be rural Ontario. Since arriving in Claremont 15 years ago, I've watched the landscape around me change as the city marches inexorably towards the country.
Ghosts of the farmhouses, barns and outbuildings, that were the lifeblood of their rural communities, are quickly weathering into a forgotten past. When I work in these settings, I feel the presence of generations of families - in the things they touched, the land they tended and the structures that sheltered them.
Many of my images are inspired by a moment long over - but still immediate, alive and full of narrative energy. Visually discovering, telling and preserving these stories gives me great satisfaction and a sense of connection to the past.
I believe these stories need to be shared, now more than ever. I hope you enjoy spending time with them as much as I have enjoyed working on them."
