My love affair with Haliburton County began in 2006, when my husband and I purchased our first little cottage on Portage Lake. Many of my paintings are inspired by the photos that I take from the bow of our canoe or on walks on scenic roads in the area. I began taking courses at the Haliburton School of Art and Design in 2007. I graduated from the Visual Arts Program in 2011. It was those courses that helped launch my career as an artist. A permanent resident in Haliburton for the past 7 years, I now enjoy painting the beauty of the landscape of all four seasons. I have always felt connected to the natural world and love to portray untouched shorelines and rural country roads in all their splendour.
I am most inspired by the play of warm light and cool shadows on rocks, trees and water and I use acrylic paint on a texturized canvas to capture it. My work has been described as ‘singing with vitality’.
My studio is located on Wenona Lake, about 15 minutes east of Haliburton. More of my work can be seen on my website at www.susanhay.ca.
