Step Into Our Mind is an 8-day pop-up art event with Limbic, a new artist collective based in Haliburton!
Our curatorial assistant Joey Varga is a member and organizer for the collective and the event.

Oh, the magnificence of texture! Today we have bee

Oh, the magnificence of texture!
Today we have been captivated and drawn in by physical texture in paintings, and we are taking a closer look at some of the ways our artists employ #texture .

Texture can be implied (which we’ll be looking at next week), or physical - which is a 3D element of the painting.

There are many ways of incorporating physical textures in paintings. You can incorporate it within the mediums like Rose Pearson in “Narcissus” (image 1), or Danielle Christie in “Mother Nature’s Garden” (image 2), and “Rocky Point” by Susan Hay (image 3). These artists used acrylic mediums, or combined it with other materials to create a 3D effect.

You can add elements to the painting, like Tiffany Howe does with denim, see “Bronze Dunes” (image 4), or with plant materials like Noelia Marziali in “Nymph of Stems & Fruit” (image 5).
Leaves and stems can be used as stamps and mark making tools, like in Rose Pearson’s “Dove & Paisley” (image 6).

With different methods of applying paint, you can create so many different textures. Look at the paintbrush strokes in John David Anderson’s “Sunday Morning” (image 7), and the paint drops and splatters of Eduard Gurevich in “Soundproof” (image 8).
Jill Segal uses tools to make textural marks in paint in “Sunflower Magic” (image 9), and Jamie MacLean does in an additive way in “River Travels” (image 10).
